Plant Propagation Ho312 - Spring 2002

  OBJECTIVES:  The goal of this class is to introduce students to the art and science of plant propagation.  This will be achieved through classroom lectures, laboratory exercises and research papers.

TEXT:             Hartmann, H. T., D. E. Kester, F. T. Davies and R. L. Geneve.  2002.  Plant Propagation - principles and practices. 7th Edition.  Prentice Hall.

ONE-HOUR EXAMS (3):  Each exam is worth a maximum of 100 points.  Each exam will have 25 multiple-choice questions (2 points each), 10 fill-in-the-blank (3 points each) and 2 short-answer essays (10 points each).  Exam questions will come from lectures, labs, and the text.  The first two exams will not be comprehensive; the final exam will be comprehensive.  Makeup exams will only be allowed for excused absences.

QUIZZES (4):  Quizzes will be given periodically during the semester and will be organized like the exams utilizing multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and short essay type questions.  Quizzes are worth a maximum of 20 pts. each.

LAB ASSIGNMENTS (14):  Each lab is worth a maximum of 10 points.  Lab grades will be based on attendance and assigned exercises.

PAPERS (4):  Will involve researching methods for propagation of horticulture crops and writing a one page detailed protocol.  Four protocols will be turned in, including two on woody plant species, two on herbaceous plant species.  Protocols should be as complete as possible showing at least two different types of propagation methodology i.e. seed, vegetative, tissue culture etc.  They should include all information needed for commercial propagation of the plant species including propagule, container, root media, tissue culture media, environment, growth regulator treatment etc.  Information for each protocol turned in will come from at least two sources and the references will be listed on the protocol document.  This project will be worth a maximum of 80 points.

Cheating, plagiarizing, or assisting others without consent of the instructor will result in a grade of zero for the first offense, and a course grade of F for a second offense.
