Ho312: Plant Propagation
Spring 2000, David Graper

Assignments: Will involve researching methods for propagation of horticulture crops and writing a one page detailed protocol.

Six protocols will be turned in including:  two on woody plant species, two on herbaceous perennial plant species and two on herbaceous annual plant species.

Of these six protocols:  two will be seed propagation methods, two will be traditional vegetative propagation methods, and two will be tissue propagation methods.

Protocols will include all information needed for commercial propagation of the plant species including propagule, container, root media, environment, growth regulator treatment etc.  You may download the files by clicking on the appropriate file name.  This should bring up a box, asking if you wish to save the file to disk.  Indicate the location where you want the file to be saved and click yes. These file should open up in most common word processors.  All you need do is edit the file -- adding your information after the appropriate headings.   The two files are:  Seed/Vegetative Method and Tissue Culture Method.

Or, you may click here to get  an HTM file for the seed/vegtetative method for how to write the information for protocols using seed or traditional propagation methods.   For protocols involving tissue culture propagation use this tissue culture method.  Information for each protocol turned in will come from at least two sources and the references will be listed on the protocol document. This project will be worth a maximum of 60 points.

Be sure to save your file as you are working on it.  Each protocol should be named utilizing the genus and species of the plant you researched and your last name as follows:  Genus species Yourname.  As an example, I did a protocol for  rubber tree the file name should be "Ficus elastica Graper".  Each method/protocol should be printed in hard copy to turn in during class.  In addition, I want the protocol in electronic format ( a word processing file) shall be sent to the instructor via email to the following address:    David_Graper@sdstate.edu  Simply click on my email address, indicate the title of your paper and the type of word processor file it is in the subject area and attach the file to the message.  If you have any comments you may make those in the body of the message.  If you have any questions about how to do this, let me know and I will help you.  I will be putting all of the protocols together on a CD that I will distribute to you at the end of the class.
